20 years ago (... dang, did I say that out loud?) this would have been a common sight. Maybe indicative of our bland and unimaginative present, the hi-top fade turns heads now. That said, like everything nostalgic, this classic is experiencing a resurgence (depending on what part of the country you're in...) I'm noticing it more and more now and folks don't even remember Kid' N Play anymore.

Story without a face.

Originally uploaded by (Jt)

I've been told many times, that it is in a person's face that we see their story. Rubbish. There is no particular way to tell a story. I believe one can see a story in any number of ways. In a way, our faces give away too much. Storytelling is as much about allowing the imagination to run rampant; an exploration of thought, as it is about being given a roadmap. As creatives, we should relish the opportunity for broad trains of thought. Relish the ability to paint our own picture of the circumstances that both precede and follow the 1/250th of a second we capture.

Sand, more sand and mostly sand! Literally hundreds and hundreds of swirling caramel and beige sand dunes as far as the eyes could see. The slanting rays of the sun are playing havoc with sand, eking out rich shades of ochre, brown and gold.

This is the Big Nothingness, the Infinite Emptiness , the largest sand desert of them all. I was standing on the western most tip of “the great sea of sand in which no oar will ever be dipped”. From this point Sahara stretches all the way across North Africa right up to the land of the pharaohs, larger than the distance between the two coasts of America. The desert covers many countries – Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Chad, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Sudan before laying the carpet under Egypt and merging with the Sinai mountain range. Some regions of this utterly desolate landscape has not seen rainfall in decades. Yet a throbbing nomadic community – Touregs, Moors and Chaamba – have made peace and deal with it daily.

Art work in derelict dyeworks (25)

TGIF Theme

I had an hour or so to spare today so ended up here :)

I’m struggling to get any history on these buildings, The dyeworks closed in the mid 90s and has been known as George Cocks Ltd or the Longfield Dyeworks. Currently the site has planning permission to be demolition for conversion into housing.

Possibly the first building was built in 1877, there is a stone plaque on this building, the rest of the site looks as if it has been added in stages as the site expanded; about 5 separate developments in total, the only history I have found point to these developments “between 1918 and 1938, when a single building, of unspecified use, was constructed. Two additional buildings were constructed adjacent to the northwest and northeast of the original building between 1956 and 1968. The site was formerly used as offices and warehousing associated with a dyeworks.”

Cella's Café - Puebla, Mexico

TWTME Gallery

The city of Puebla is the capital of the state of Puebla and one of the five most important colonial cities in Mexico. The city, located East of Mexico City, is found in the valley of Puebla, also known as the Valley of Cuetlaxcoapan. It is surrounded by mountains and volcanoes, notably the Pico de Orizaba - the highest mountain in Mexico and the third highest in North America with a height of 5,636 meters; and the Popocatepelt - an active volcano and second highest peak in Mexico with a height of 5,426 meters. Puebla was also named World Heritage Site in 1987 and is today famous for its mole poblano, chiles en nogada and Talavera pottery - which you can see in this picture.

They were coming by feet from Himachal Pradesh, owners of nothing. We started together , but I was often stopping for shooting, everytime when I joined them again they said "how can you be so fast! We finally climb together. The problem is that you have to climb and climb to the top and you finally discover that you have to go down and up again to reach this temple (you see it on top of the hill).very friendly and intelligent people.

He danced a few steps of the merengue for me and obliged me with a few photos.

#1. Crepuscular in the Redwoods

TGIF

#1 on Explore--far beyond my expectations!
Misty in the redwoods. ;-) Normally that might mean a photo of my dog in the redwoods. This time, however....it means wonderful rays of sunlight highlighted by the mist. As luck would have it, we were on our way back from the coast (birding) and I'd FORGOTTEN a wide angle lens. So I had to search for compositions I could squeeze into 50mm (100mm comparable) and shoot at low speeds with my big heavy lens. Lucky sometimes, having to think outside the box. ;-)

This was taken as I was on my way home from a very enjoyable and productive early morning's photography at the beginning of December... I thought I was done, but as the sun came up over the trees, it caught the freezing fog, and cast a warm glow across the landscape...

I've been working on giving my website a long overdue face lift... it's almost done and I've got it up and running, I still have a few little tweaks to make, but it's more or less complete www.zerogravity.me.uk

One of these moments... You walk in the street, you see a potential good shot, you take it and on the screen of your camera it doesn't look great, but when you see it on your computer, you realize how many great details there are in it. This is just luck. I mean, I took this shot thinking that the 4 people had a symetry and that the front of this store should looks like a frame, but I didn't noticed that there was many more symetries in the composition. Plus, I was lucky, because I took it while walking and it should have been screwed, with blur...

Dreams in a Square 3 of 52

Monochrome Mondays

So this is the project for 2011 , dreams and slices of life in a mono square . In the year ahead there will be blur , movement and processing . there will also be wild experiments with high iso and whatever home made filter comes to hand to stick in front of the lens, all trapped inside a square . it mightn`t suit everyone but i hope to have fun doing it and seeing where it takes me ;-))

Our Daily Challenge: Natural Framing

I have to admit, I never really heard of natural framing before. After reading the cool article linked in the post I realized I've done it before, just never intentionally. It's funny how you can do things without thinking about them but when you challenged your mind it fills up with static. Took me awhile to come up with this one. Hope you like

Between the Rain and the Snow

Weekend Showcase

The drizzle stopped, the sun made a brief appearance, then it began to snow. This was our New Years Day walk along the edge of the Roaches in the Peak District. From the ridge line of the Roaches, there is a spectacular view across the Dane Valley towards Cheshire in the west. Tittesworth Reservoir can be seen to the far left of the shot. On the top of my screen, there was this number. A number I didn't think I would get to so soon. I've reached my 500 profile veiws.

I know it sounds like a small achivement, but to me, this is monumental. This was a hobby I was too shy to persue for the longest time. I had no skills to start with. Just a camera and a hope.

Just a brilliant event....lots of fun....great costumes....and utterly silly...what's not to like?

Naturally, I did ask some friendly police officers how a tourist from Edinburgh was supposed to identify the zombies from the regular Glaswegians. ;-)

My congratulations...and thanks...to Colin Armstrong (a.k.a. 'The Zombie King') for creating and organising such a fun event.

This effect was achieved entirely in-camera. I arranged the matchsticks as they appear in this photo. Then I focused on the four innermost matches. I set the exposure to be 1.3 seconds(at f/11 and ISO 100) and zoomed out as the shutter was open.

Optical Illusions
+ If you view large, and scroll up and down, it appears as if the matches are bending
+ If you stare at the center for long enough, it appears as if the center is expanding
